Gifted children

Helping a gifted child is not as easy as many (who've not got one!) may think. Apart from often getting bored and disinterested in schoolwork, they may be the subject of bullying.

Having a private tutor can make all the difference, but it is crucial that you have the right one. It's all in the relationship. Some tutors are very good at developing a stimulating rapport with gifted children, and some are not. My sense is that the ideal tutor should have a wide range of experiences and an open and enquiring mind. He or she should be enthusiastic and committed to the personal and academic growth of the child.

Your school

Ensure that your school has a policy on meeting the needs of gifted pupils - and ask for a copy. It is mandatory.

Plus, the school budget includes funds to resource any extracurricular activities that will enhance these children's learning experience.
