Special needs

This is mainly a collection of links; I'm not a specialist in any of these areas, although I do work successfully with children who have certain special needs. There is a great deal of activity in these areas, so lots of links!

1. Special needs in education - the official view

Since September 2002, schools have had to ensure that all pupils with disabilities are treated no less favorably than others, and are not disadvantaged in any aspect of school life, from teaching and learning, to access to after-school clubs or the lunch queue.

The Dfes website has good information at the TeacherNet website.

The QCA's latest thoughts on teaching students with special educational needs is at: Planning, teaching and assessing the curriculum for pupils with learning difficulties. This is written for teachers.

2. Support organisations

Independent Panel for Special Education Advice - Defending children’s right to special education provision

network81 - a national network of parents

Special Educational Needs & Disability Tribunal - Parents whose children have special educational needs can appeal to the Special Educational Needs & Disability Tribunal against decisions made by local education authorities (LEAs) in England and Wales about their children's education.
